Do They Speak English?
Yes, many speak English, and the people are very helpful. They know we wander off and get lost! I have needed their assistance many times and had no issues. I actually now have a life time friend who I met on a hike in Switzerland!

My first trip was to Bern.
I flew from Zurich with no issues. Many flights go each day. Bern is the capital of Switzerland and therefore offers quite a bit to see and experience. The city is full of history and therefore many museums, art, history and more. I visited several and also went to Albert Einstein’s residence at the Einstein House.
I ate at different little cafes that served some of the best coffee I have ever had. Not to mention the sweets that I accompanied my coffee with
Switzerland – Perfect for a Solo Trip
I spent a lot of time just walking the town. There was so much to see – it was a feast to my eyes. The old town was very interesting. It has been claimed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That is significant and offers a lot to see and do. This is where I spent a lot of time. I met a few great people in the bars and cafes.
I visited the Rose Garden. It has the best view of the city from the cathedral tower. The town is a little feast for your senses. I recommend at least a full day here.
Lucerne, Switzerland
Lucerne is my favorite! There was so much to do. You name and they offered it. I opted for rafting, boat ride and eating and drinking. Hey, no judgement!
The town sites between two lakes; Lake Thun and Brienz. You must see the water in these lakes. It is a beautiful turquoise. Not what I expected to see in a lake. It’s not what you get here in Texas.
They offer boat trips and if you have the time, I recommend doing at least one. You get to see the area from a different perspective. I loved seeing Giessbach Falls.
As far as landmarks go, is the Thun Castle (now a museum) and the Romanesque churches that you will find all around the lake are something you need to see. I wandered into many of them and it was a very calming experience where I felt I was connecting with the universe.

Zurich, Switzerland
This is one of the major cities in Switzerland so it comes with more people and a different view of Switzerland. I’m not a big city person so I didn’t stay long but I needed to see what it was all about. I did get in a bit of shopping. There is a famous shopping mile called Bahnhofstrasse.
We all know that Zurich is all about finance, but it does offer more. I took a river cruise that gave me a totally different view than from the streets.
I’m an avid bike rider so I took my chances on a bike. The bikes are free! I cycled around the lake, and it was exhilarating. There I was little ole me from Texas, on a bike riding around this beautiful lake with no cares in the world. I felt empowered!
I was there in early spring so it was not warm enough to squeeze my oversize body into a swimsuit, but I heard that in the summer you will find the locals hanging out by the lake. I’d be right down there with them if the temperature was about 15 degrees warmer!
I took the train and visited the Rhine Falls. This is one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls and one of the biggest tourist attractions in Switzerland. It took about an hour by train to reach Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall. Amazing!
Switzerland – Perfect for a Solo Trip
Lugano, Switzerland
Lugano is the closest Swiss city to Italy and therefore is influenced by the Italian culture in food and language. It felt a little like Monte Carlo. There is a rumor that I will find celebrities in the area. I’m not really a celebrity seeker but hey..it could be interesting to have a glass of wine with Clooney!
The shopping boutiques were wonderful. They were a bit out of my budget, but it was fun to look and see all the wonderful things they offered. I stuck to the hiking and meandered around in the city and did a whole lot of people watching. That’s my solo style.
I took a long stroll down the promenade and found a great park where I could have my picnic. There is nothing like sitting in a park in Lugano Switzerland and having your own little picnic. So relaxing.
This place has its share of museums and historic buildings to see. But I lean more to the outdoor activities and so I enjoyed the trails and being on the bike.
I recommend at least 2 days in this lovely town.
Where to Stay:
You will not find a shortage of places and types of places to accommodate you. There are apartments, hotels, B&Bs, Swiss chalets. I saw a lot of people camping in a beautiful field where cows were their neighbors. What bliss!
I always start out by looking on Booking.com and then I may venture out to look for a few non-traditional places to stay to liven up the experience.
I’m a slower paced traveler and I don’t feel like I need to cram a lot in a few days. I like to relish the culture and the environment. For me, that is what it’s all about.

Switzerland – Perfect for a Solo Trip
Since I focus on walking and hiking, I go in the summer months. Of course, I know there are less tourist in the fall, but the weather starts getting a bit cold for me starting in late December.
